Sodium Lactate

Sodium lactate

Sodium lactate is a salt of lactic acid, a compound formed, among other ways, during the fermentation of sugars. It occurs naturally in the skin as one of the components of NMF, a blend of substances that hold water in the stratum corneum.

In cosmetics it acts as a humectant: it attracts and binds water, leaving skin soft and well moisturized. Together with lactic acid it also forms a buffer system that stabilizes the product's pH, and in hair care it helps smooth the strands.

In our cosmetics you will find it in face creams and serums, micellar waters, cleansing foams, shampoos, hair conditioners, foundations and soaps.

Did you know?: Lactic acid, from which sodium lactate is made, was first isolated from sour milk - hence its name. Soapmakers add sodium lactate to soap because it makes the bars harder.
