Glycation and sugars in cosmetics - why it is better to use a sugar serum than to eat sugar?
Contents
Today we come bearing news from the "it could not be worse" category. It is partly about sweets and partly about our everyday choices. As it turns out, the sweet things we love so much can at the same time be our skin's greatest enemy. Sugar, ladies and gentlemen, because that is what we are going to look at today, can do a great deal of harm on the one hand and a great deal of good on the other. Paradoxically, when it comes to this particular culprit, it is worth pointing out that what accelerates skin ageing in our diet can have a rejuvenating and regenerating effect in cosmetics. How is that possible? Well, sugar to eat and sugar in cosmetics are two entirely different stories. The confectionery kind can lead to glycation and premature ageing, while the other one - captured in a well-designed cosmetic formula - becomes an amazing ally in the fight for beautiful, hydrated and radiant skin. In short, not all sugar is the same, and its clever use in a skincare routine can bring spectacular results. Welcome to a fascinating world in which sugar becomes the hero rather than the villain!
Glycation - the sweet enemy of youth
Let us start by talking about glycation. This process accompanies us throughout our lives, although few of us are aware of it. It is a complex biochemical reaction in which sugars attach themselves to the proteins in our body, creating what are known as advanced glycation end products (AGEs). What is worse, the effects of this process later become visible on our skin.
Roughly speaking, in the context of the skin glycation affects collagen and elastin, the two most important proteins responsible for the firmness, elasticity and youthful look of the complexion. The bonding of glucose with proteins, which creates the AGEs mentioned above, stiffens collagen fibres and makes them less elastic and more prone to damage. That is precisely why excess sugar in the diet can speed up skin ageing processes.
And what visible effects of glycation can be observed with the naked eye? Well, they include wrinkles, loss of elasticity, a sallow skin tone and even pigmentation changes. What is more, this process grows stronger with age, as well as under the influence of UV radiation and environmental pollution. Unfortunately, we will not hide the fact that it is a kind of vicious circle. Because the more AGEs there are in our skin, the more exposed it is to further damage.
What we eat matters enormously, and when our diet is full of simple sugars, especially fructose, that significantly accelerates glycation processes. Let us look at which foods get in our way: sweet drinks, snack bars, baked goods, sweeties or even an excess of fruit can age our skin. Here it is a matter of choosing well and cutting back on what does us no good. Let us go by the glycaemic index of products - the higher it is, the sharper the rise in blood glucose, which translates directly into more intense glycation processes.
But there is good news too. We can counteract the effects of glycation in several ways. First - a conscious diet and certain limits, of course. Here simple sugars and high-glycaemic-index products go on the shelf. But there is also a second option, and a far more pleasant one. Conscious skincare with the right cosmetics will give us what glycation wants to take away.
We are dealing here with a fascinating paradox, because although consuming sugar in excess contributes to a worse skin condition, certain sugar forms applied externally in cosmetics can have a wonderful effect (although they do not completely undo glycation processes). Among the substances that are sugar-based in nature are humectants, which bind water molecules and maintain proper skin hydration but do not react with proteins (as happens in glycation).
A sugar revolution in cosmetics - not all sugars are equal
When we think of sugars, what usually comes to mind is a sugar cube and sweets. In cosmetics, however, we are not talking about the white, refined sugar familiar from our kitchens. Here a whole range of natural substances with a sugar structure comes into play, acting as humectants, that is compounds that bind water in the skin. They include ingredients such as trehalose, fructose, glucose, inositol and sucrose - the shining stars of skincare that you will meet in many of the best cosmetics.
Take trehalose, for example. It can be classified as a true wonder of nature - trehalose is a disaccharide present in many living organisms, known for its ability to survive extreme conditions such as complete drying out or freezing. In cosmetics it plays the role of a stabiliser - it protects cell structures from degradation and water loss. Bonus: it also has antioxidant properties, protecting the skin from the harmful effects of free radicals.
Next in line is inositol, often called vitamin B8, although formally it is not one. It too has a sugar structure, which in cosmetics acts like a magnet for water. It is responsible for regulating the skin's water and lipid balance, for strengthening the protective barrier, and it is an expert at soothing irritation. Sensitive and allergy-prone skin will get on best with inositol.
In the role of cosmetic moisturisers and pH regulators we meet the simplest sugars, that is fructose and glucose. These two sugars bind water in the skin, which helps keep it at an optimal level and prevents the epidermis from drying out. Meanwhile the table sugar everyone knows, sucrose, is used in cosmetics not only as a humectant but also as a gentle exfoliant that removes dead skin cells.
Molasses, a by-product of sugar production, is a true treasury of minerals and vitamins. In cosmetics it is an expert in nourishing, regenerating and soothing action - it is simply excellent at supporting the skin's natural renewal processes.
All these ingredients have one thing in common - they are connected with sugar, but they also share another important feature: unlike sugars in the diet, they do not cause glycation of skin proteins. Their superpower is that they act as humectants, that is they help maintain the right level of hydration. And that is genuinely crucial for slowing down skin ageing processes.
Another advantage of sugars in cosmetics is that they often work wonderfully with other active ingredients, such as acids (lactic, gluconolactone, maltobionic), niacinamide or peptides. Such synergy is a real treat, allowing multidimensional care effects to be achieved - from deep hydration through sebum regulation to smoothing and brightening the skin. A dream come true, or quite simply - sugar :)
What else is valuable about these particular sugars? Well, for example the fact that in cosmetics they are often obtained from natural sources. And that is great, it further increases their value in the eyes of conscious consumers. Here are a few examples: molasses from Wasanbon sugar, oligosaccharides from cotton or trehalose are the clever ingredients that combine effectiveness with care for the environment.
Ministerstwo and sugar are a beautiful match - at Ministerstwo we understand the potential of sugars in skincare perfectly. In the products of the "Sugar" series you will find carefully selected compositions of various forms of sugars which together create a wonderful synergy offering multidimensional moisturising, nourishing and regenerating action.
The sugar treasures of Ministerstwo Dobrego Mydła - a routine you will love
At Ministerstwo we have created an exceptional series of cosmetics called "Sugar", precisely in order to highlight the beneficial aspects and action of sugars. We have dressed them up with the active ingredients they work with so beautifully. There are quite a few products in this line, and each of them answers specific skin needs, so everyone can find something for themselves. The Sugar series is exceptional and offers comprehensive care based on the latest discoveries in cosmetology.
Sugar - a gentle, moisturising face toner
First the toner. It might seem that it is still a product often skipped in daily care, and it should be the other way round! A toner is an important part of a routine, so at Ministerstwo we created something you actually want to reach for. The Sugar toner instantly restores the skin's optimal pH after cleansing, but it also delivers valuable active ingredients along the way.
The Sugar toner contains a 3.5% blend of acids, including gluconolactone and maltobionic acid (PHA) and lactic acid (AHA). All of this allows it to balance the skin's pH gracefully and to gently exfoliate dead skin cells, thanks to which the skin becomes soft, smooth and brighter. It is enriched with niacinamide, which supports skin regeneration, reduces the visibility of pores and imperfections and evens out the tone. In short, the combination of ingredients - excellent.
But, as tends to be the case with us, that is not all. In the Sugar toner we also included humectants, among them the sugars mentioned earlier, which help maintain the right level of skin hydration and which are the strength of this product. One of them is medium-molecular hyaluronate, which forms a delicate film on the skin's surface, limiting moisture loss. Propanediol, meanwhile, helps active ingredients penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. Team "humectants" is really strong in this product.
An additional asset are the ferments and extracts that have a positive effect on the skin's microbiome. Among them we find bamboo ferment, Yerba Santa bioferment and radish ferment. All of them support the skin in regenerating and provide it with an extra dose of hydration.
So much goodness means plenty of effects. The instrument-based studies testing the results of regular use of the Sugar toner speak for themselves. They showed an increase in skin hydration of nearly 10%, an increase in skin firmness and elasticity and a visible reduction of pores by an average of 30%. What is more (and even more wonderful), 100% of the study participants confirmed that the toner is gentle on the skin, makes it softer to the touch and supports its regeneration.
The toner's pH value is 3.1-3.6 - a level that allows the acids it contains to work quickly and effectively. Importantly, after just a few minutes the toner restores the skin's pH to an optimal level, so you can safely move on to the next stages of your routine.
Sugar - a light moisturising serum
A serum: a concentrated dose of active ingredients that work on specific skin concerns. The Sugar serum from Ministerstwo Dobrego Mydła is even a little more than a serum, it is a true booster of hydration and nourishment that can be used on its own or combined with your favourite cream or oil.
The serum was created on a base of soothing eyebright hydrosol and built on a complex of sugars (molasses, trehalose, sucrose, fructose, glucose, inositol) that hydrate the skin intensively. It is additionally enriched with ingredients supporting hydration, that is propanediol, hyaluronic acid and urea.
Importantly, the serum also contains niacinamide, which stimulates the production of collagen and elastin - and as we remember, these are the proteins responsible for firmness but also exposed to glycation. Niacinamide prevents wrinkles from forming and reduces the signs of skin ageing. Also worth noting is the amino acid complex (serine, alanine, glycine, glutamic acid, lysine, threonine, arginine, proline), which hydrates the skin deeply and has an anti-wrinkle effect.
The final chord of this symphony are ceramide NS and phytosterols, which rebuild and strengthen the skin barrier, ensuring a long-lasting hydration effect. Bacillus ferment, in turn, strengthens the skin, increasing its hydration level by stimulating lipid production.
What sets the Sugar serum apart? The delight begins with the very first use - a light, pleasant texture that does not weigh the skin down, does not stick and does not pill after application. The serum absorbs instantly and is a good choice both in the morning and in the evening. It pairs up beautifully - it will make a great duo with your favourite cream, oil or facial oil serum. Here we simply mix both doses of product in the hollow of the hand, or we can apply them in layers.
We are proud of the results of the application studies, they are genuinely impressive - 100% of those tested confirmed that the serum reduces skin dryness and provides hydration, supports regeneration, makes the skin more radiant and improves its condition and overall appearance. Best of all, and this really is the cherry on the cake, 100% of those tested also declared that they would recommend the Sugar serum to someone close to them!
Sugar - a smoothing face mask with succinic acid
And now the perfect complement to the Sugar line - an intensely nourishing, smoothing mask for the face, neck and décolletage with a creamy texture and an enchanting candy floss scent. It is a truly multifunctional marvel that can be used in several ways: as a classic mask rinsed off after a dozen or so minutes, as a mask-cream for the night (in place of your daily face cream) or as a spot "treatment" for imperfections.
The main character of this mask is succinic acid (Succinic acid), whose multi-tasking role is to exfoliate, limit the formation of blackheads and imperfections, reduce the visibility of pores and significantly limit sebum production. This ingredient is outstanding in the care of oily, acne-prone complexions.
In the mask you will also find gluconolactone, which moisturises, evens out skin tone, smooths and has an anti-wrinkle and anti-acne effect. We invited maltobionic acid, allantoin and niacinamide to work alongside it, and we did not forget ceramide NS, phytosterols and trehalose either, which support the rebuilding of the skin's protective barrier.
We know - that is quite a lot, but this delightful set of active ingredients is topped up with another list of wonders, so fasten your seatbelts. Prebiotic inulin, hydrolysed cotton seed extract, oligosaccharides, Japanese upcycled rice extract and molasses from Wasanbon sugar - the special task force for skin affairs. In addition, the mask contains an amino acid complex, sodium lactate and PCA - components of the NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor), which hydrate the skin deeply.
The Sugar + succinic acid mask restores radiance to the skin, reduces discolouration and makes the skin look luminous and healthy. It also helps deal with the number of blackheads and the visibility of pores, reducing their number by 30%. With the mask at hand and therefore in regular use, the skin stops becoming excessively oily, the chance of new imperfections appearing drops, and those already present on the skin disappear faster.
The instrument-based studies of the Sugar mask give reason to smile - they confirm the mask's effectiveness. So let us look at the results: a reduction in the number of pores (large ones by 30.3%, small ones by 31.1%), a reduction in sebum production by 18%, a reduction in skin roughness by 8.4%, an increase in skin hydration of 8.9% and a reduction in melanin production (and therefore brightening and a reduction of discolouration) by 6.4%.
Last but not least, the mask's pH is around 3.5-4, which ensures optimal action of the acids it contains. Please note, however, that because of its intensive action it is worth applying the product to a small area of skin on first use and observing your skin's reaction. Safety first!
Why is it worth going for sugars in cosmetics?
A short summary: sugars in cosmetics do very well indeed - they hydrate and support the skin's natural regeneration processes. Unlike the sugars that end up in our stomachs and can accelerate ageing processes through glycation, sugars applied externally act as humectants, binding water in the skin and preventing its loss.
The Sugar series from Ministerstwo Dobrego Mydła is a comprehensive answer to the needs of different skin types. It is an attempt to capture all this sugary goodness in one theme, divided across several cosmetics. We have a gentle moisturising toner that restores the skin's optimal pH and delivers valuable active ingredients. We also have a light moisturising serum that hydrates and nourishes the skin intensively without weighing it down. The smoothing mask with succinic acid, in turn, works on several fronts - it hydrates, smooths, reduces imperfections and restores radiance to the skin.
All the products in the Sugar series have one thing in common - the potential of sugars as active ingredients in cosmetics. Combined with other carefully selected components, they create synergistic formulas that look after the condition and appearance of the skin beautifully. The results are there, and they are lovely!
The products in the Sugar series are vegan. It is also worth pointing out that these sweet cosmetics are sealed in biophotonic glass packaging, which provides high protection against visible light, shielding the most delicate raw materials from losing their effectiveness.
We hope that after reading this you will no longer have any doubts about whether it is better to use a sugar serum or to eat sugar. Go for sugar cosmetics that will look after your skin effectively without causing the unwanted effects of glycation. And as for sugar in the diet... well, the less of it the better. The Sugar series from Ministerstwo Dobrego Mydła is an excellent choice for everyone who values a natural, effective and conscious routine, and for those who love sugar - but the kind that will do their skin no harm :)
