Skin

Dry, sensitive, prone to irritation and allergies, mature, tired, as well as problematic and oily

Effects

Moisturised and softened skin, firming, smoothing, fewer imperfections, more even skin tone, reduced sebum production

Squalane is an ultra-light, fragrance-free, hypoallergenic oil that works beautifully for every skin type, including delicate and sensitive skin. It absorbs perfectly, deeply moisturises and nourishes the skin without leaving any unpleasant tight or heavy feeling. It softens the skin and restores its velvety smoothness. It also has anti-aging benefits - it gently firms, improves elasticity and tone, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and evens out skin colour.
It doesn't clog pores, reduces the number and visibility of blemishes and cuts sebum production (by as much as 16%!), making it a must-have for combination, oily, problem and acne-prone skin.
Thanks to its light texture, when applied to skin previously moistened (with a toner or hydrosol) it spreads effortlessly and absorbs quickly, leaving the skin radiant and glowing with health.

We could talk about squalane for ages. Sugarcane-derived squalane is its purest and most stable form, with the best cosmetic properties known to us. It is the counterpart of squalene, a component of our own sebum - the lipid layer that envelops and protects our body. It keeps skin soft and supple and protects it from harmful external factors. It prevents excessive water loss through the epidermis. With age, however, squalene levels drop, we become less firm and elastic, and the skin loses its glow and turns dull. And this is where squalane comes in - to save the day.

A wonderful product to use all year round, combined with your favorite cream or applied directly to the face, ideally after spritzing it with a hydrosol. It gently nourishes and doesn't cause breakouts.

The best squalane I've ever used, my skin is super soft, and it strengthens the hydrolipid barrier, which I struggle with especially in winter

I add it to my cream, probably more out of habit than because of the effects. It gives good slip and makes it easier to spread products on my face.

I use it together with the H2O cream. I have dry skin, so this combo is perfect. It nourishes nicely, so my face doesn't feel tight. The effect lasts a long time. I use it morning and evening.

FAQ

Questions and answers about the product

Why does the squalane come with a dropper while other oils have a pump? Can I buy squalane with a pump?

Squalane has too thin, almost watery a texture for a pump to be a convenient applicator - in this case, a dropper allows for more precise dosing of small drops :).

What are the benefits of mixing squalane with a cream?

Sugarcane squalane is an excellent carrier of active ingredients, and its tiny molecules penetrate quickly and deeply into the epidermis - so combining it with a cream will, in a sense, "boost" the effect of that product by delivering its beneficial ingredients deeper :).
Adding squalane will also enrich the cream with its own properties: it nourishes, restores the skin's smoothness and elasticity and reduces fine lines. It's the perfect solution, for example, for winter skincare, when we need to make our favourite cream a little richer.

What does squalane smell like?
Sugarcane squalane is fragrance-free :).
Can I use it under makeup instead of a cream?
Yes, there are no contraindications! Just remember that, like any oil-based product, sugarcane squalane should be applied to moistened skin (e.g. with a hydrosol) :). Of course, please note that squalane does not provide the sun protection needed every day - so it's a great idea to use it in your morning routine together with a sunscreen.
What is the texture of squalane like?
Sugarcane squalane is a non-greasy, ultra-light oil with a fluid, rather thin texture - that's why we chose packaging with a dropper, which lets you measure out a small amount of product for precise application :).
Does it leave a greasy film on the skin?
As the lightest oil in our range, sugarcane squalane applied to moistened skin absorbs in an instant, leaving virtually no greasy feeling behind :).
How well does squalane absorb?
Sugarcane squalane absorbs perfectly and very quickly :). As with any oil-based cosmetic, please remember to apply it to previously moistened skin (e.g. sprayed or wiped with a hydrosol).
My skin is very dry and flaky. Will squalane work for me, or would you recommend a different oil?
When caring for dry, flaky skin, the key is to strengthen the hydrolipid barrier, i.e. to properly hydrate and replenish the skin's lipids. Squalane will take care of replenishing lipids without weighing the skin down thanks to its very light texture - however, it must be combined with a moisturising product, so apply it to previously moistened skin (e.g. with a hydrosol) or as the last step of your routine, over a moisturising cream :). For very dry skin, it's worth consulting a cosmetologist - it may be a good idea to exfoliate before applying nourishing products to remove dead skin cells and prepare the skin to absorb active ingredients.
How long does one bottle of squalane last?
Depending on how you use sugarcane squalane (as a reminder, it can be used as a standalone face product, an addition to creams/oils, a hair ends treatment or a nail conditioner), how often you use it (morning and evening, daily or every few days) and how much oil you apply (1-3 drops, or maybe more? ;))), one bottle should last from about a month to several months.
How many drops of the product should I add to creams?

We recommend adding just a little squalane, 1-2 drops per portion of cream (mix in the palm of your hand or in a separate small dish right before applying to your face :)).

Can I mix squalane into my cream jar so it's ready to use, or should I mix it right before applying to my face?
We definitely recommend the second option - add a little squalane (1-2 drops) to a portion of cream (in a small dish or directly in your palm) right before applying it to your face. This is very important for the microbiological safety of the cream. The amount of preservative in every cosmetic is precisely matched to its weight, volume and ingredients. "Diluting" the cream with squalane in its original packaging may make the preservative system ineffective, and the product no longer effective and safe.
Are there any creams I shouldn't add squalane to?
Both creams in our range - Rose-Raspberry Jam and H2O - already contain sugarcane squalane. However, we see no contraindications if you'd like to enrich them further - just remember not to add the oil directly to the cream packaging, but to mix small amounts in your palm (or a separate small dish) right before application :). As for creams from other manufacturers, we can't speak on their behalf and recommend contacting the brand directly :).
What colour is squalane?
Sugarcane squalane is colourless and crystal clear :).
How many drops are enough for the face when used on its own?
This is of course very individual, but let's say that 1-3 drops of squalane is optimal when applying the oil "solo" :). As with any oil-based cosmetic, please remember to apply it to previously moistened skin (e.g. with a hydrosol).
Can it work completely differently on two different skin types?
Of course! Depending on factors such as your skin's individual needs, its current condition and your skincare habits (and even the season you use it in!), sugarcane squalane can give different results :). For example, someone whose skin gets everything it loves on a daily basis will have a completely different experience from someone struggling with dryness or a lack of elasticity and smoothness ;). Some complexions love oil-based care, while others definitely prefer light emulsion formulas (like creams or milks) and, as is often the case in life, there's no single, simple rule :).
What does mixing squalane with other oils do? Why mix oils together?
Sugarcane squalane is a very light, fine-molecule oil - so it's perfect for "thinning" thicker, heavier oils or as a carrier for active ingredients - adding it helps the enriched oil blend work even more deeply and effectively. Oil blends let you tailor the texture, colour, scent and action of the final product to your personal preferences - a touch of hazelnut oil gives the blend a beautiful scent, almond provides good slip, prickly pear brings anti-wrinkle properties, and squalane helps everything absorb better. Creating your own cosmetic blends at home can be totally addictive and help you find solutions your skin will truly love :).
Can I store squalane in the bathroom?
Absolutely, you can store it in the bathroom - just make sure the bottle isn't exposed to direct sunlight. It's also worth making sure no moisture gets into the product. A closed cabinet or a shelf in a shaded spot is the best choice.
Can I store squalane in a sunny place?
We kindly ask you to store the product in a dry, cool and shaded place - although squalane is a very stable oil, resistant to external factors, exposing it to sunlight (and thus heating the contents of the bottle for a long time and to excessive temperatures) may negatively affect its properties and usability :(.
What does it mean that squalane is a carrier of active ingredients?
The tiny molecules of sugarcane squalane work brilliantly as a 'transporter' for active ingredients meant to reach deep into the epidermis - thanks to this property, squalane is a fantastic addition to cosmetic blends :).
Does it have a genuine anti-wrinkle effect?
It does! Sugarcane squalane restores the skin's proper hydration level and cares for its smoothness and elasticity - so it slows down skin ageing and reduces fine lines :). For anti-wrinkle care, we also encourage you to check out our prickly pear seed oil and the stars of the Rose-Raspberry line - the jam and the serum - products rich in anti-ageing active ingredients (including squalane!) :).
Is squalane safe for allergy-prone skin?
Yes, it is! In tests on people with sensitive skin, it was rated as a hypoallergenic product. It can be used on allergy-prone skin (after a patch test on the forearm) and even on the delicate skin around the eyes.
Is it a natural remedy for cellulite?
Sugarcane squalane does not have strictly anti-cellulite properties, but regularly massaging any oil - squalane included - into the skin helps prevent loss of firmness and can visibly smooth it :). It also works well mixed with coffee grounds, giving you a natural homemade scrub with a lovely feel on the skin. Keep in mind, though, that our squalane comes in a 30 ml bottle - used as a massage oil or scrub base, it will last a relatively short time. For the body, we much prefer to recommend sweet almond oil or hazelnut oil, which will serve you longer :).
How is squalane different from an oil (e.g. raspberry seed oil)?
One difference is how they are obtained: sugarcane squalane is an oil fraction produced by fermenting sugarcane, while oils are pressed (ours are cold-pressed, to be precise ;)) straight from seeds, kernels or nuts. Sugarcane squalane is super light, fragrance-free and colourless - by comparison, our raspberry seed oil, being unrefined (not purified in any way), has a slightly earthy scent and a delicate yellow colour.
How is your sugarcane squalane different from olive squalane?
Sugarcane squalane is considered to be purer and more stable than olive squalane, and it is the most structurally similar to human squalene - which makes it work more effectively on the skin :). The two types also differ in how they are made - sugarcane squalane is produced by fermenting sugarcane, while olive squalane is made by hydrogenating squalene extracted from olives (we mean the ones used by Ministerstwo :)).
What is the difference between squalene and squalane?
Squalane and squalene - apart from their similar-sounding names, these substances have similar properties and effects. There is, however, one very important difference between them - their level of saturation. Squalene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon, while squalane is its saturated form (the double bonds of squalene are fully saturated). This makes squalane stable - and that is exactly why it is the one used in the cosmetics industry.
Can it be used on oily, acne-prone skin?
Yes! There are serums and oils for fighting acne built on squalane, which is light and penetrates deep into the epidermis, "carrying" active ingredients with it. Always apply it to slightly damp skin, misted for example with rosemary hydrosol, and of course see how your skin responds - in facial care, universal solutions are hard to come by.
Can squalane be used on combination skin?
Just like with oily skin - yes! Massage a small amount into a damp face. You can treat yourself to a quick facial massage at the same time :). PS: You can of course also apply it over your cream, patting it only onto dry areas (e.g. forehead, cheeks) - it is worth experimenting!
Can squalane clog pores for some people?
Used properly, it should not. It is super light, but remember it is an emollient. It works by creating occlusion (a continuous layer) on the skin's surface to lock moisture into the epidermis. For some this is a lifesaver (the skin barrier regenerates and "seals"), for others it is too much - which is why we recommend always applying it to slightly damp skin, so that combined with water (e.g. hydrosol) it forms a water-oil mix rather than a continuous film.
Is the amount in your H2O cream enough, or is it still worth using squalane on its own?
That is very individual. This question cannot be answered by email, nor once and for all. H2O is a light moisturising cream - ideal for one skin type, too light for another, too rich for yet another. Some people will enrich H2O with squalane every time, some will add a drop to their night cream or boost it in winter. And some will never need to, or only once in their life, when for some reason their skin becomes exceptionally dry. That is exactly why we love squalane - it adapts our cosmetics to what we need, here and now :).
I need to rebuild my skin's hydrolipid layer. Will squalane help?
It should :) (we find it hard to promise certainties - after all, what in this world is certain? ;)). It is an excellent emollient, so it will create a light occlusive layer, lock moisture into the epidermis and let it regenerate. Just remember to apply it to wet skin, sealing that moisture in.
Should I use it on its own or paired with another oil?
On its own, mixed with a portion of your favourite cream or serum (blended in your palm), under cream, over cream, with a mix of other oils, with butters... That is what makes squalane so special: it is light, fragrance-free and multifunctional. It can be a base or a top layer, a soloist or a team player, depending on what you need.
What to combine it with and how? A DIY question
With just about anything - from hydrosols to a cream that's too light for winter or left over from summer, but always one portion at a time: mix it in your palm or in a separate small dish right before applying (we're talking strictly civilian, skincare use, of course ;)). Among oils, we love mixing it with plum oil - it thins out this rather thick, rich oil so it spreads more easily, for example on the face. A drop of plum, a drop of squalane in the palm of your hand and off it goes - onto hair ends, face and nails.
One brand offers retinol in squalane - is that a good idea?
The idea is good, the rest comes down to execution ;) (which matters a lot, if not most), but yes, absolutely, it works.
Can I use it during pregnancy? Is it worth it?
Of course! It's a hypoallergenic ingredient and also works great for baby care (e.g. added to sweet almond oil or shea butter warmed in your hands). Is it worth it? That's something you have to find out yourself ;). It's versatile, so you can apply it to your face, belly, dry hands, and even use it to nourish brows or lashes. Our pregnancy memories also give it bonus points for being fragrance-free ;).
Is it better for night or for day?
Totally for whenever you like! ;) Some use it at night, others during the day, and contrary to what you might think, there's no split between dry and oily skin here. At our place: Ula applies it on damp skin at night, Anka uses it day and night, the guys put it under their beards after a bath, and the kids run away because they don't like oils ;)) PS: Or solo during the day and over cream at night? Always worth testing.
Can squalane be used all over the body or only on the face?
You can use it wherever you like (depending on your needs ;))! Face, brows/lashes as a conditioner, scalp, the whole body including pregnancy bellies, dry heels, elbows, calves, cuticles, nail plates... phew ;). The obvious drawback of using it all over the body is the price of the ingredient, but it's perfect for enriching light lotions or heavier oils, such as sweet almond or hazelnut oil :).
How should I use your squalane? Can it replace a cream?
Use it your own way ;)). Instead of cream, under cream, over cream, mixed with raspberry oil or plum oil from our apothecary, and massaged into body, hair and nails :). Experiment to find even more ways this oil works for you :).
When should I use it? What concerns does it address?
Use it every day or on special occasions :). Picture a light, biocompatible emollient that beautifully nourishes the skin. For minimalists, it can be the entire routine (a cream, serum, lotion, nail and hair conditioner in one). For maximalists, it's a booster for their favourite cosmetics. And the concerns? Dry facial, body and scalp skin, brows and lashes in need of nourishment, dry, splitting nails and cuticles, a dehydrated, irritated scalp and much more :).
Can I use it all year round?
Absolutely :). In summer, it's ideal for sun-kissed cheeks and shoulders; in winter, it protects against wind and also acts as a "booster" for lighter creams so they can nourish the skin even during the heating season.
Will it strengthen blood vessels?
As an emollient, squalane seals the epidermis, protecting it from excessive water loss, but it doesn't penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. So it can't strengthen blood vessels, which lie deeper, in the dermis :).
